Comparing Motherboards for the Upcoming Core i7 Processors

In the next few months, more and more buzz will be generated for new motherboards. That's because with the launch of Intel Core i7 processors, only new motherboards with the X58 chipset can be used. In other words, if an enthusiast wants to upgrade a CPU, the motherboard has to be upgraded as well.

A lot of information has been released by technology news websites on various motherboards such as the ASUS P6T Deluxe OC Palm,Intel DX58SO, MSI Eclipse and EVGA's X58 SLI motherboard. In order not to be overwhelmed by the plethora of articles on these motherboards, it may be a good idea to be clear headed and focus our attention on the crucial elements.

Crucial element 1: Speed

The overall speed of the computer system depends on the multiplier values of the system. For example, you can achieve higher performance if you tweak the multiplier values of the CPU or the memory. Overclocking enthusiasts will be most interested to know if the system can run reliability at the overclocked values.

In this area, the ASUS P6T motherboard offers an extra in the 2.5" LCD displays that presents system configuration information, overclocking data, etc. This is useful for overclockers who want to tweak and monitor the system while it runs.

Crucial element 2: Graphics

The graphics of a computer system is another major component to take into consideration. Many software applications require a lot of graphics processing power to run smoothly. This includes professional software, such as video and audio editing software that performs a lot of zooming, panning, modeling of 3D objects, etc. Many 3D games also require powerful graphic processing for best effects.

Enthusiasts should check whether the motherboard has SLI (Scalable Link Interface) support. SLI is a technology developed by nVidia, and it's used for multi-GPU processing. Not all motherboards support this feature because manufacturers are required to pay a royalty to nVidia if they want to offer support for SLI.

Since SLI is meant for intensive graphics processing, only those who need it for business applications or gaming need to consider having this feature.

Crucial element 3: Memory.

The memory on a system affects the overall speed of the computer. With powerful processors, enthusiasts have to make sure that there won't be a bottleneck when it comes to memory. Having insufficient memory could mean that the system will run at substandard performance.

Motherboards with the X58 chipset offer support for triple channel DDR3 memory kits. Various memory manufacturers from Taiwan and China have already released memory kits that are timed perfectly for the Core i7 processors.

Enthusiasts should pay attention to the number of slots available. For instance, the ASUS P6T motherboard has 6 memory slots, allowing a max memory of 12 GB. Other motherboard options may have only 3.

As far as the motherboard is concerned, there are various editions available. Of course, one can expect the high-end editions to be much more costly. However, enthusiasts can still enjoy the increased performance at an affordable price if options are selected wisely.

Registry Needs Cleaning - Main Reason Computers Run Slowly

When using your computer and adding or removing files or programs, fragments of data are left on your hard drive in the Windows registry. Over a period of time this accumulates and causes the registry to become overloaded with unwanted data. This the most prominent cause for slow running, freezing and crashing problems.

Spyware or adware is installed unknown to you by third parties who want to track your computer usage and benefit from this knowledge. This also uses up your computer's resources and can be another cause of slow running. Free antispyware programs can be downloaded on the internet and do an excellent job.

Needless to say viruses are a major problem if they infect your machine. Every computer which is used on the internet must have an antivirus program installed or infection is certain. A firewall is good protection but is not enough on it's own. Free antivirus programs are readily available on the internet and do a very good job of protecting your computer.

When your computer registry accumulates a large amount of unwanted data entries it becomes bloated and clogged. The operating system finds it difficult to navigate through all the junk in order to find the data needed to run your computer. The result is a slow running computer, freezing, and the occasional complete crash. If not corrected this will steadily get worse.

Your computer registry is a databank of information which the operating system uses to run the computer and programs. All Windows operated computers since Windows 95 have a registry. This is the most common source for computer problems involving slow running, freezing and crashing.

If your registry has become corrupted by unwanted material the best solution is to remove these entries by cleaning the registry. You can use the regedit function which is installed on all Windows computers, for this purpose,to do this yourself. With the regedit function you can remove any unwanted entries from the registry. Use great caution here however as many registry files are absolutely necessary for running your machine. If you remove any of these entries you can cause problems.

Unless you are very knowledgeable about the contents of the registry, and can recognise the essential entries which must not be removed, you should not attempt to edit the registry yourself. It is better to be safe and to use an online application to clean your registry safely and easily.

Several register cleaner applications can be found online. The most popular applications will all clean your registry reasonably well. However as with most things some are better than others and there are considerable differences in ease of use, safety and availability of email help when you need it.

Notebook Computer Displays

When it comes to laptop computers, the choice of display size is one of the most important considerations you have to make. It is just as important as ram size, hard drive size, and processor speed. The display size will also heavily factor into the overall weight of the notebook computer. A larger display size means a larger physical footprint, which is more or less desireable depending on whether you need an ultraportable, mainstream, or gaming style computer. The most important factor, however, is your comfort level. A smaller screen (ultraportable size) may mean great mobility, but none of that is helpful if text or pictures appear uncomfortably small.

Types Of Displays

Due to increasing demand, more and more manufacturers are making widescreen displays available as well as standard displays. Standard TV's and computer displays utilize a 4:3 (or 1.33:1) aspect ratio, including notebook computers.

Standard 4:3 Aspect Ratio

The standard 4:3 aspect ratio has been in use by notebook computer displays for a long time and is offered in several screen resolutions:

- 800 x 600 (SVGA) - 1024 x 768(XGA) - 1400 x 1050 (SXGA+) - 1600 x 1200 (UXGA)

Resolutions higher than 1024 x 768 can only be found in displays sized 14 inches and above. Ultraportable notebooks with displays sizes under 14 inches are unable to have high-resolution displays.

Widescreen Display

Using a 16:9 or 16:10 aspect ratio, widescreen displays can generally display about 25% more content than a standard display. Computer manufacturers offer several size displays from 8.9", 10.6", 11.1", 12.1", 13.3", 14", 15.4", to 17". These sizes are popular now with even larger sizes in the pipeline.

When used for entertainment, DVD movies in particular, a widescreen display is in its element as it shows widescreen movies in their intended 16:9 aspect ratio. This means a bigger picture, more comfort and thinner or no black bands on either side of the picture.

The widescreen display also makes it easier to edit and view panoramic images and may eliminate horizontal scrolling on your computer altogether. When editing images of normal 4:3 aspect ratio, you can simply place your GUI tools/utilities in the unused spaces on either side of an image. In any case, a widescreen display can help you increase work and play efficiency.

Another benefit of the widescreen display is evident when it comes to serious work - the ability to display two windows side by side and to drag and drop (or copy n' paste) data without having to switch windows is invaluable.

Common Widescreen Display Resolutions

Here are the common resolutions found in :

1280 x 768 And 1280 x 800

1280 x 768 (16:9.5) and 1280 x 800 (16:10) are the two most common resolutions used in 10.6, 12.1, 13.3, 14, and 15.4-inch entry-level widescreen notebook computers. They provide about a 25% more onscreen content than standard screens with 1024 x 768 resolution.

1366 x 768

This resolution provides a 16:9 aspect ratio and a great widescreen DVD movie experience without any black bands above and below the picture.

1440 x 900

This resolution 16:10 is found only in 17" notebooks and is positioned as entry level in 17" widescreen notebooks.

1680 x 1050

This is currently the mainstream resolution, also 16:10, for 17" widescreen notebook computer displays. There is a 35% increase in onscreen content compared to normal 17" screens using a standard display resolution of 1280 x 1024.

1920 x 1200

At this time this is the highest for 17" widescreen notebook displays, and provides a 75% increase in onscreen content when compared to a standard 17" screen of 1280 x 1024 resolution. A great display for movies and gaming, however this relatively heavy laptop computer has tradeoffs in mobility.

Create Your Audio CDs from MP3 Files

Digital files like music files are now popularly stored in digital systems like computers. The computer as a storage system requires a certain format from the music file that will be stored and mp3 format is the most widely used format. People choose to store database of music using the mp3 format in their computer. However, like any other file creating mp3 backup is also essential. Mp3 backup creation can prevent file crashing, file corruption and other troubles you wouldn't want to happen in the first place. So what needs to be done then? Back up your mp3 files by converting the files into audio CDs.

The Answer: Creation of Audio CDs from MP3 Files

Since converting your mp3 files or your music files into an audio CD is essential and the most convenient way and smartest way to do. Though the converted audio CD can serve as the backup files of your mp3 files, it is still more appropriate to say that the mp3 files converted into audio CDs is not exactly the real process of making backup files.

This is why there is a need for CD burning software that is being used to burn or create an audio CD along with the CD writer drive. How is CD burning or creation of audio CD from mp3 files done? To make it simple, you as the user just have to compile your mp3 playlist that contains the mp3 files or music of your choice. Then, you will store the music files with the help of the CD burning software.

What are the burning procedures in creating your audio CDs from mp3 files?

Before you even get disoriented, you should be aware first that the burning procedures are easy and undemanding. To start with the burning procedure, the mp3 files like your music need to be converted into another format file called compact disc audio or CDA. However, and for the record the CDA conversion process happens internally which means it is run by the software program. The display result of the CDA operation is not shown for the sake of the user, you just have to be aware of it.

Nero: the Most Popular CD Burning Program for MP3 to Audio CD Conversion

And for the most popular CD burning program, Nero is always on top of the list. Nero is always the choice of many users because of its capabilities to take over all burning procedures, including unknown conversion processes and options for customization intended for advances users. An example of the Nero customized options is its simplified audio editor. The audio editor can offer advanced options that consist of noise reduction, stereo widening, file splitting, and sound equalization.

For the record, not all CD burning software can offer the same advanced features since other situations require manual processing prior to CD burning. Other software is employed like the audio editing software to do the manual operation. But the good thing about this is that, software other than Nero burning program is made available online. In fact, beneficial editing functions for mp3 files actually lead to the so called normalization process.

The Normalization Process: Another Essential Procedure in Audio CD Creation

The normalization process involves the smoothening out of the volume spikes that exist in various tracks contained in the CD. Normalization guarantees the loudness and sound variation of music or mp3 files when played. The results of the editing procedure need to save in WAV format which in turn will be burned in the CD.

There are times that mp3 files can be stored or burned into another format known as compact disc recordable or the CD-R format. Though CD-R format can be applied by the users, certain digital systems, especially the advanced and modern CD players, do not support the form. The incompatibility of the CD-R format will not let the files like music files to be played at all.

MP3s Don't Necessarily Require Various CD Formats

Though it is not fundamental to convert mp3 files into a new and different format, the files can be burned directly to audio CDs without undergoing any conversion process. So if the WAV format will be executed, there will only be 10 songs as compared to 120 songs that will be saved when mp3 files will be stored and compressed in just a CD via CD burning. The stored files in the audio CD format can be played using other digital players because the CD format is compatible with both CD and DVD formats.

Tips on Buying Desktop Computer

Whether your old computer is shot or you have never bought a computer on your own before, you may be feeling a little bit nervous about the whole thing. Buying a computer represents putting down a fair chunk of your hard earned money, and you may be nervous about getting a computer that isn’t a great fit for your needs.

The truth is, getting a good desktop computer that suits you is easier than you think, and by simply keeping the following tips in mind, you’ll be able to find the perfect computer that will keep you happy for years to come.

* Know what you want your computer for

Think about how you use your computer. Are you someone who only uses a computer for its word processing ability, or do you prefer to stay up to date on the latest games.

Maybe you are someone whose entertainment is largely focused around your computer; all of your communication and your movies are kept on your computer. By keeping a clear idea of what you need your computer for, you will be able to get the right machine.

* Know what RAM is

RAM stands for Random Access Memory, and you will find that what it does is affect the speed with which your computer “thinks,” that is, processes action. If you are only using your computer for things like surfing online or writing, you’ll find that a RAM of 512 MB is okay, though 1GB is ideal.

You’ll find that this size will give you room to expand or grow if you want to later on, but that it’s not so big that you are wasting your money. If you are going to be gaming, or doing advanced computer programming with your unit,, you will of course want more.

* Don’t worry so much about hard drive space

Your hard drive space generally refers to the amount of information that you can keep on your computer, ranging from written work to audio and visual media.

You’ll find that if you download a lot of videos that this can be eaten up fast, but in desktop, you’ll find that it is very easy to add some more. Remember that while you do have a finite amount of space that it is all in how you use it.

* Online or from the store?

You’ll find that ordering online is actually a lot cheaper, but keep in mind that you should have a clue about what you are looking it. If you choose to build a computer yourself, you’ll find that it is much easier to get the parts online.

At a store, though, you will find that you can often take the time to look over the specs, speak with a sales representative and take a look around to see what else is available. It really depends on what you are comfortable with.

If you are looking to buy a desktop computer, remember that you really need to think about what you want it for. Once you have the function decided upon, it is very easy to figure out what machine will be perfect for you.

How Can I Fix ActiveX Errors?

There is nothing worse than browsing the web—researching airfare for your next vacation, buying tickets for tonight’s show, watching a news video—and then getting interrupted with an error message such as, “Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page. As a result, the page may not display correctly.” Or you could be checking your email or downloading music when an ActiveX error pops up. When these errors occur you may be left frustrated and asking yourself, “What is ActiveX, and how can I fix it?” It turns out that your Pc is not really in need of an ActiveX repair, but a registry repair.

What is the Registry?
The registry is like a low-level operators manual for your Windows operating system. It stores information and settings for basic functions—its almost like a dictionary. Every time you right click on your mouse for example, your computer accesses the registry, which will “define” the action and tell the computer what to do. The registry has information that is native to the operating system, but this dictionary can also be added to or overwritten. In the event you install a new mouse for example, new information might be added, or old settings might be replaced. An easy way to know if your registry has been altered in any way is if you are required to re-boot your computer (typically after installing new hardware or software).

What is Active X?
Computers allow us to do a lot more than just click a mouse however, and that’s where ActiveX comes in. Certain programs like Microsoft Office, Windows Media Player, or Internet Explorer require very advanced functions, and are constantly changing and upgrading. One way to look at it is that these programs have advanced so much beyond the basic building blocks, they no longer speak English. In order to access the basic information contained in the registry (which they need to function), they need a translator. ActiveX is that translator. ActiveX accesses information stored in the registry, and communicates it to these programs so they can function at the next level.

Problem:
ActiveX is often hard at work behind the scenes accessing the registry for information. These efforts usually go unnoticed and go off without a hitch, but you may be unlucky enough to experience an error. Some common errors are:

• When ‘Downloading ActiveX Control’ your Internet Explorer freezes
• Runtime Error ‘429′: ActiveX Component Can’t Create Object
• Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page. As a result, the page may not display correctly.

These errors are frustrating but one can see why they might occur. What’s happening is that ActiveX is trying to access the registry, or “dictionary.” But the dictionary has become overcrowded and altered beyond recognition. Picture this: There are now two or three different definitions listed instead of only one. Someone has pasted over sections with new information, and the original text can’t be found. Pages have gone missing, and information has been misfiled. The dictionary is now virtually useless. You are now in desperate need of registry repair.

Solution:
One solution would to go out and buy a new computer (i.e. purchase a new dictionary). Not only is this not a realistic solution financially, but all that new and valuable information would be lost. The ideal solution is to flip through and edit the entire dictionary, page by page. Fortunately, this solution is offered via a software called Reg Cure. Reg Cure is a registry cleaner that uses the most sophisticated technology available to analyze your registry for missing, obsolete, and corrupt entries. It is a safe, effective way to fix your PC registry errors. You can download Reg Cure and scan your computer for free at RegistryRepairProgram.

Don’t let ActiveX errors keep you from accessing your favorite programs. Reg Cure offers you an easy solution to a common problem. There is no need for ActiveX repair, simply use this comprehensive register cleaner and your ActiveX errors will be a thing of the past.

Transferring Files Between Windows and UNIX

Unix FTP can be used to transfer files between PC's and Unix-based file servers
. File transfer protocol (FTP) is the network protocol that is used to transfer the files from the PC to the Unix file server over TCP. The Unix file server will need to have an FTP server installed, and the PC will need to have an FTP client installed. The standard port for FTP communication is port 21. IETF RFC 959 outlines the specifications for FTP.

Most FTP clients use an asynchronous method of communication, also referred to as non-blocking FTP. With this method, the FTP Client uses an asynchronous interface to the Windows sockets TCP/IP driver providing the fastest file transfer data rate possible while using a minimal amount of system resources.

Using FTP, Files can be uploaded and downloaded in either ASCII or binary format. Binary files are files where bytes in the file can be any 256 bit pattern. Examples of binary files include zip files, executables, images, and sound files. ASCII files are text-based binary files that can only use the 128 ASCII codes. Each ASCII character has a corresponding hex value and binary value. For example, the hex value for the letter "A" is 61, and the binary equivalent is 0110 0001.

The FTP server on the Unix server can be configured to require usernames and passwords, or to allow anonymous connections. With anonymous access configured, any and all users are able to upload files to and download files from all directories that are configured for public read and write permissions. On Unix servers, the File Manager can be used to set permissions on files and folders so that anonymous users cannot access them. Alternatively, user accounts can be created on the FTP server, assigned a username and password and access permissions applied at the user level.

Secure sockets layer (SSL) can be used for an added layer of security. With standard FTP, data that is transferred between the PC and the Unix server is not encrypted. Using FTP with SSL (FTPS) ensures that the data being transferred is protected from eavesdropping, tampering, or message forgery by encrypting the data before transferring it. IETF RFC 4217: "Securing FTP with TLS" outlines the specifications for FTP with SSL/TLS security. According to security standard for FTP, by default SSL encryption is only enabled on the command channel. This means that usernames, passwords and file locations are protected, but the transferred files remain vulnerable. To implicitly protect files that are uploaded and downloaded, the data channel also needs to be encrypted by enabling this configuration option in the FTP client.

Advanced FTP clients also provide additional productivity-enhancing features such as an intuitive GUI, the ability to save and transfer entire lists of files, and the ability to save a list of recently transferred files. A Windows GUI allows users to connect to the Unix server and manipulate the necessary files without having to become accustomed to the Unix interface. Many users transfer a specified list of files on a regular basis, or have the need to upload and download the same file multiple times. In this case, recent and custom file transfer lists can save users a lot of time.

With the popularity of Unix servers on the rise, Unix compatible FTP solutions are becoming increasingly commonplace and continue to expand their feature base.

10 Reasons to Use Apple Computers

Apple computers are known as the sexiest computers in the market. But Apple’s Mac computers have more to it than looks. In fact, a lot of people even say that its operating system and applications is better than any other computer they know of. So what makes Mac computers stand out from the pack? Well, below are some of the reasons:

Less software installed

Is having less software on your computer really better? Some people won’t agree but every IT expert will tell you that the less software you have the better. Why? It is because you will have more disk space, lesser problems, and faster processing. Apple enables you to install only a few necessary programs with a variety of applications.

The Mac OS X is more lenient

The Windows XP and the Windows Vista makes it difficult for you to install a duplicate copy on another computer. The installation is easy and hassle-free; you don’t need to worry about staying activated because you will be. The Mac OS doesn’t require you to register before you decide to upgrade and they won’t look into your computer to look for duplicate copies.

Mac pushes the limits

Apple don’t only push the limits of technology in terms of hardware, it also does this in terms of design and functionality. Mac is best known for its fruit-colored computers while other companies were pushing for the serious look of using black and white. It has also shown in versatility when it dropped the SCSI support and drop serial in favor of the FireWire and the USB support.

Mac can run on Windows

Mac computers can run on Windows but PCs cannot legally or legitimately run on Mac OS X. The question is, if you’re using a Mac, why would you want to run on other PC software? It is not really a question of why though because sometimes it simply becomes inevitable. For example, if Photoshop stopped working after you used Leopard, you will need to install the PC version on your Mac. It’s nice to have the option if you really have to.

Mac has a higher “second hand value”

If you’re trying to sell used computers, it is difficult. You will have to lower it as much as you could and you might not even make decent money for all your efforts. The PC market is crowded and trying to unload used goods into it is bound to be challenging. The story is quite different for a Mac computer. People will still pay for this stuff. And they will be happy to pay a higher price too.

Mac computers are hard to get rid of

If you need to replace your PC every 2 years to keep up with the times, you have no such problem with a Mac computer. Their applications are so far ahead of its time and are usually so useful that you can use it conveniently for years. You will definitely have a hard time getting rid of your trusty old Mac even if you want to.

Buying Tips: How to Buy A Used Computer

Today, many people consider having a computer as a must. Whether it may be for school, work, research, or simply for recreational purposes, a computer is definitely something that most people cannot live without.

But not all people are ready to invest in such a huge sum to get a computer. Fortunately, anyone can now buy used computers nowadays. Used computers are of course less expensive than new ones, but can still perform and function well. Although most people often associate used computers with bad quality, there are used computers that function as well as new ones, provided you know what to look for in one.

Assess Your Needs

Just as with any purchase decision, assess your needs before buying a used computer. Is mobility important to you? Will you need a personal desktop computer or a laptop? Will you use it to simply create documents and files, or will you use it for Internet or gaming? Also identify if you’ll need a large range of memory or not. By determining your needs beforehand, you can better find a used computer that suits you and your budget.

Do Your Homework

It pays to do research beforehand. If you walk in straight to a used computer store, you might get overwhelmed by the number of choices presented before you. You’ll end up leaving the place in a more confused state. Also, it might be annoying to have a salesperson constantly following you to bombard you with a computer’s specifications. The best way to avoid this is to do your homework beforehand. Do some research online so you can have an idea on what computer specs you will be buying. This way, when you leave your house, you will have a more definite picture on what you’ll be buying, and will more likely end up buying what you need.

Go for Brick and Mortar Shops

Although you can do your research online, it’s sometimes best to buy the actual product on land based shops. This way, you can actually get to test and try out the product, which is very important since after all, it is a used computer. You can thoroughly inspect it and judge whether or not it justifies the price. Also, this eliminates extra costs such as shipping and handling costs, which usually come with online stores. But buying from online stores have its advantages as well so be careful in weighting the pros and cons of this option.

Online Stores with Warranty

If you choose to buy used computers online, then at least choose a store that gives you a warranty and a money back guarantee. Because you cannot inspect and try the computer out for yourself, the best insurance you can get for yourself when buying used computers online is through a warranty or money back guarantee. You will also have higher chances of locating your dream computer online, since there are many resources available in the Internet.

High Powered Gaming Moves to Notebook PCs

PC games that are resource intensive have been restricted to desktop systems until recently as portable devices were still not powerful enough to allow the games to run smoothly. Usually, these are 3D games that require a lot of CPU and graphics processing power. Even high-end laptop have been unable to meet such demands the same way as their desktop counterparts. Hence, consumers have found it difficult to bring their favorite 3D games along when on the move.

However, with the release of Intel's Core i7 processors, all that is about to change. The Intel Core i7 is a whole new generation of processors that runs on the X58 chipset.

The Core i7 platform offers support for triple-channel DDR3 memory. The way memory works on the new systems is also different. Traditionally, memory controller have been located outside the CPU. For improved performance, each core of the i7 processor now has an in-built memory controller. This allows communication of the CPU and the memory to operate at maximum efficiency.

When considering any computer system, the CPU, memory and graphics are the most important components for many gamers. For 3D games to run at optimal level, the system has to be equipped with adequate graphics processing power as well.

The first few generations of computer systems used the CPU to process graphics. After a few short years, the evolution of applications demanded more processing power. As a result, motherboard manufacturers started to offload all graphics processing activities to a dedicated piece of hardware - the graphics card. This allows graphics and video to be processed in a more specialized manner, thus greatly enhancing video capabilities.

With the surge of 3D and video applications, the demand for even more graphics processing power is increasing. To scale processing power, there are only two ways to go. The first option is to increase the speed values of the processor. For example, a 1.5 MHz CPU can be upgraded to a 2.0 MHz CPU. The second option is have more CPUs, sharing the workload. That is why we have dual core and quad core CPUs.

For the video card, the scaling process is similar. NVIDIA came up with a way to offer multi-GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) capabilities. They call this technology SLI. Unfortunately, not all motherboards offer SLI support automatically. Only higher-end models offer support for SLI.

The Toshiba Qosmio X305 notebook, aimed at gamers who require high-end graphics resources, comes with support for Triple-SLI. Triple-SLI means that there are three GPUs configured in the notebook. This is the first notebook that uses this configuration.

With such powerful configurations, gamers no longer have to worry about not being able to bring their favorite 3D games along with them while they travel.

Check Disk Errors and How to Prevent Them

There are two things going on in your computer at all times: The file system and your hard drive. When your computer is on, the file system is hard at work processing and making things happen. The hard drive actively records and then stores this information. Think of it like this: the file system is like a courtroom. All sorts of things are happening: testimonies being made and evidence presented. The hard drive is like the court reporter, recording all the information. As soon as the courtroom shuts down for the day, its essential to have an accurate record of that day’s proceedings. This exchange can go awry for a number of reasons. For example, if your computer freezes, and you are forced to shut down, the hard drive may not finish recording a piece of information. Or the hard drive itself can be damaged internally, by something simple like someone bumping into it. (Your hard drive, or hard disk, records information almost like a record or CD and can get scratched.) Luckily, commands like Check Disk, or Chkdsk exist for DOS, OS/2 and Windows operating systems. Chkdsk is used to find and fix errors on the hard drive. Your computer will prompt it to run when there is an error or errors. Using the example above, if your computer freezes and you are forced to restart, Chkdsk will run when you start back up. It will scan your hard drive, and fix any problems.

Unfortunately, Chkdsk can sometimes become corrupted or encounter problems in the registry. Chkdsk errors usually indicate a damaged registry.

The registry is a directory that stores fundamental settings and options for your Windows operating system—it is literally the most important set of data on your computer. It keeps information about your hardware (like your mouse, keyboard, or monitor), software (Windows 2000 or Microsoft Word for example), and user settings and preferences. The registry is constantly being added to and/or updated. If you install a new program, view a web page for the first time, or download something in your email, new information may be added or overwritten in the registry. Unfortunately, over time, this directory can become crowded, disorganized, and/or information may have been replaced. Registry repair is essential to ensure error-free operation of your computer. RegCure is the most advanced Windows registry cleaner on the market and uses advanced technology to scan your registry for missing, obsolete, and corrupt entries. At RegistryRepairProgram.com, you can download a free scan for your computer. If you elect to use RegCure, your registry will be repaired eliminating problems like Check disk errors. Most of us would rather not wait until our computer crashes (potentially losing valuable information) before realizing their PC has errors. Using a registry cleaner can fix any issues before they become a major challenge. Additionally, if your registry is tip-top shape, it will eliminate any Check disk errors.

History of laptops

The concept of laptops developed when more and more people were clamoring for a portable computer they can work with while traveling and carry it to different locations. The laptops that were initially introduced were somewhat crude and lacked the sophistication of the laptops as we know and see them today. They were very bulky, had very small displays, without hard drives and everything ran from the RAM or floppy disks.

In 1981 the Osborne Computer Company released the first portable computer and called it Osborne 1. This laptop computer, when not in use and closed up, resembled a locked up sewing machine. It was powered by an electrical connection with an optional laptop battery backup. It had two 5 ¼" floppy drives (mounted to the right and left of the display), and included a modem port. The biggest drawback was the display was only 5-inches wide and could show only a limited 52 characters per line.

Then in 1983, Gavilan introduced the Gavilan Mobile Computer. It was peculiarly built and the screen folded over the keyboard when closed. It weighed 9 pounds, and could run on nickel-cadmium batteries for close to 9 hours.

Three years later in 1986,Radio Shack released the TRS – 80 Model 200 This model was more compact, had a much larger display and more effective laptop battery power, and included built-in software. People used this model for creating simple documents and considered it to be pretty high tech at that time.

A year later in 1987, IBM released its version of a laptop computer calling it the 5155 Portable Personal Computer. It had two double-sided 5 ¼" drives and 640K RAM. The 5155 however did not support graphics and was used for the limited processing of text-based information only.

During 1988, Compaq introduced the SLT/286 Laptop which had overcome the graphics barrier. This model however weighed a hefty 14 pounds, had a 1.44 floppy drive and ‘286’ processor. NEC joined the fray with the NEC UltraLite, which weighed just 4.4 pounds and had overall dimensions of 11.75" (W) X 1.4" (H) X 8.3" (D).

Macintosh entered the laptop scenario in 1989 with their Portable that weighed around16 pounds and had a 9.8-inch 640 x 400 active matrix screen. Its redeeming feature was an operation time of close to 10 hours on a lead-acid battery. These early laptops from Macintosh later evolved into the PowerBook line and now the MacBook line.

It was only in the 1990s we saw the faster, sleeker machines with more storage, more ports and connectors, improved displays, and weighing much less and comfortable enough to carry around. The Apple Macintosh PowerBook line and the IBM ThinkPads became major competitors in the laptop market.

Companies now create new laptops with faster processors and more features packed in smaller packages and the laptopshave really come a long long way from the 1981 Osborne model. Since the 90's the technology has helped to vastly improve the performance of laptop computers. Longer lasting laptop battery as well as huge hard drives now makes the Laptop a serious challenger to oust the desktop computers from the marketThe summer of 1995 was a watershed year in the history of laptop computers. In August of that year Microsoft introduced Windows 95. It was the first time that Microsoft had placed much of the power management control in the operating system. This move held a great deal in simplifying and stabilizing certain key aspects of notebookdesign. Windows 95 also brought in the importance of the CD-Rom drive in mobile computing, and initiated the shift to the Intel Pentium processor as the base platform for notebooks.

Video Analytics Solutions for Commercial Enterprises

Office complexes, manufacturers, warehouses, service firms, corporate enterprises and more can all benefit from video analytics. Intelligent video software, when used in conjunction with video surveillance, can provide a variety of functions to improve the efficiency of basic operations, increase safety and security and much more.

Efficiency and Effectiveness

Video analytics is a growing technology which greatly increases the efficiency and effectiveness of video surveillance systems. Powerful software is able to analyze video pixel by pixel all in real time for increased and quickened information flows. Beyond in depth analysis, video analytics can also be used in transferring information to those who need it when they need it.

Built upon Internet networks, video analytics is a powerful part of a remote access security network. Managers, security personnel and employees can all access the system from any computer with an Internet connection. This allows for remote monitoring and information gathering to occur at any time, day or night, regardless of where users may be.

For protection of this online surveillance system, high level encryption is utilized. This is then combined with a multi-level password system which controls who is able to do what with the software, and keeps unauthorized personnel out of the system all together.

Improving Security

Security is important for any security operation. The intelligent software can keep a close tab on restricted areas, for example, and automatically notify managers, security and other required personnel should unauthorized persons enter these areas. Video motion detection and other alarm triggers can also be used to activate alarms during off-hours, so your software is providing 24/7 protection.

Many video analytics software programs can also utilize object recognition capabilities. Objects are programmed into the software, then should anything happen to the object, such as it becoming damaged or moved, the software can recognize this event and send out immediate alerts so that appropriate action can be taken at once. This is especially helpful in manufacturing plants and warehouses which might have important and high risk objects which need extra protection.

Video analytics software can even be programmed to differentiate between normal and suspicious behavior. Should anyone be seen acting in a suspicious manner, the software can then notify required personnel so they can keep tabs on the situation and to keep the situation from becoming a problem.

Employee Management

Employee management is another area in which video analytics can be very helpful. This includes ensuring that employees are following proper procedures and standard operating practices. The software can also analyze employee patterns so that management can keep tabs on exactly what employees are doing and when to improve overall efficiency, whatever your commercial enterprise may be.

Improving Overall Efficiency and Effectiveness

Whatever your operation, video analytics can help you in increasing your overall efficiency and effectiveness. Keeping detailed records and powerful analysis of daily operations can help managers to identify areas of inefficiency, and develop new methods to better complete the company's mission.

The best part of all this is that the software is able to perform all of these functions automatically. Your commercial enterprise can save money in needing constant and full monitoring of video surveillance systems, as the software can identify many problems on its own. It also serves as a powerful back up system, picking up on things that might be missed by employees on their own.

Work can also be done off-site, as needed, saving in travel times and costs. This is another great benefit which commercial enterprises receive when using video analytics technology. Remote access is a powerful tool and one of the many solutions that video analytics technology provides.

The Next Generation of Portable Media Players

Portable media players are becoming more and more popular. With the widespread use of WiFi (wireless Internet access) penetrating our daily lives in cafes, schools, libraries, airports, and other public spots, more and more people are turning to portable gadgets.

Portable gadgets can be used for play or work. These gadgets may include portable media players, laptops, netbooks, or the UMPC (Ultra Mobile PC). The type of gadget that a consumer decides to buy depends very much on his or her own personal needs and wants. For example, if an individual wants to use a portable gadget for work, a laptop may be the best option. That's because the laptop is able to house more powerful hardware, and more applications can be run from the system. However, the drawback is that most laptops are still bulky compared to other portable gadgets.

In contrast, modern entertainment gadgets that are portable are lighter, smaller, and come in more popular designs. The Archos 5 Internet media tablet is such an example.

The Archos media tablet has its own built-in CPU. However, as this gadget is meant mainly for entertainment purposes, the CPU is often left out of the limelight. Most consumers are mainly concerned about whether the graphics will run smoothly, and how many movies they can store on the media player.

You can use the Archos media player to watch TV content, stream movies over the Internet, or play your own movies. This device supports many media formats. Formats include MPEG, WMV, H.264, AVI, and DivX. There is no QWERTY keyboard available. All the commands are issued using touch screen. The only off screen operations are the power and the volume control.

This gadget comes in 3 versions - 60GB, 120GB, and 250GB. The smallest version weighs only .55 pounds, while the other two versions weigh .66 pounds. That means you can easily bring the device wherever you go without hassle. The amount of disk space required depends on how much content you wish to store in the gadget. Given the advanced compression technology available today, each high quality movie will usually require no more than 1GB of disk space.

There are many ways that an individual can store content in a media player. Content can be easily downloaded over the Internet. Or special software can be used to convert VCD or DVD movies into digital formats. The media player can also be connected to the television set for recording of programs.

If you grow tired of existing content, you can also connect to the Internet to perform some simple operations like web browsing or checking email. While connected to the Internet, you can download more content such as movies, Anime episodes, or simply stream content without downloading.

Obviously, a portable media player is a great traveling companion. You can use the gadget to provide you with some great entertainment while waiting for a flight, or while you are in the hotel. This useful gadget retails for less than $500. For all the functions that it performs, it's definitely worth considering.

High Definition Video

High Definition television normally refers to any video system of higher resolution than the standard definition. The original high definition specifications date back to the early 1980s, when Japan first experimented with a 1025 line television standard. The signals for high definition require a high definition television or a computer monitor in order to be watched or viewed. High definition will normally have an aspect ratio of 16:9. The aspect ratio of the regular wide screen film that is shot today is normally 1:85:1 or 2:40:1. The standard type of television has a 4:3 aspect ratio. When high definition first unveiled the H3 to the market, it staged none of the over the top glitz or glamor many expected. Held at a tiny theater in Tokyo, the event barely even resembled a minor product launch. High Definition cameras also offers a memory stick setup system that memorizes various parameters and enables instant recall. Once you set up for the first time, it will remember the settings then go right back to the previous parameters at the touch of a button.

High Definition camcorders came out later on, which the ability to put them on your computer or even take your camera card to a local store and have the photos printed out on professional paper. Over the years, camcorders have evolved in so many ways that it is not even funny. These days, high definition video camcorders are dominating the market. They are relatively new and quickly catching on, giving you so much you can do with your camera. Unlike the past, camcorders are now capable of capturing full videos as well, proving that they are indeed capable of capturing any memory you can possibly imagine. On the other hand, if you take a lot of pictures and enjoy making videos, buying a camera may be the best option for you. Even though they cost a lot of money, these cameras are ideal for anyone who is seeking the absolute best in technology. These cameras are nothing like cameras of the past, as they can do so much more with a lot better quality.

Cameras that offer high definition are simply the best you can buy. They are obviously more expensive than digital camcorders, with some models reaching upwards towards 90,000 and above! These types of cameras are normally for professionals, as the average working man would never be able to afford such an expensive type of high definition camera. The average high definition video will run 800 and up. high definition camcorders offer you the chance to shoot high definition pictures and videos, and send them to friends or family. You can also save your shoots to disk or memory card, then take them with you everywhere you go.

The high definition is designed for a variety of remote acquisition applications, especially in television production for recording programs and for use as a weather or even traffic camera. The Pan Tilt Zoom can display images onto a large screen in auditoriums, teaching hospitals, sporting events, trade shows, and even concerts. This unit is also ideal for distance learning applications in which clear high definition images need to be projected onto electronic white boards during a presentation or other function.

Keep in mind that you need a powerful computer with a lot of memory to deal with the extra data and compression. Pinnacle for example, recommends a minimum 512 MB of RAM and a graphics card with 128 MB of RAM for standard resolution video. You can find plenty of software available that supports editing high definition videos. For example, the latest versions of Pinnacle Studio and Media Studio 8 can import and edit files in high definition format.

If you only plan to use your camera for a few days or just a short period of time, then renting may be your best option. Producers and professional photographers looking to take things to the next level, may choose rent a high definition video to test the waters before making the purchase. If you have never experienced high definition before, renting may be the best idea before you sink a ton of money into buying one of your very own.

Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) Console Hardware Review

Any gamer looking to purchase a video game console has to consider several issues. These issues ultimately affect the buying decision, and depending on individual preferences, some will certainly outweigh others. So it's important to know what your own preferences are before setting out to buy a piece of video game hardware. After all, video game consoles can be rather costly, costing three hundred dollars and up a piece. Therefore, it's always a wise thing to do a little bit of home and read some reviews before making any decisions - which is probably why you are here, as this is going to be a review on Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3).

Now when doing your own research on which video game console is best suited for you, you may want to start with performance. There are performance in various category such as graphics and CPU processing speed. But let's just start with looking at CPU performance. Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) boasts of a unique cell processor. How a cell processor works is that the processor has several different cells, all capable of processing information at the same time. This make it the most powerful CPU that a video game console has on the market. Some reviewers have claimed that this most of the CPU resources have not been utilized, and this is true to a certain extent. I would, however, argue that for Sony has been developed with the future in mind. With so much raw power, it is exciting to imagine what the console can achieve in a few short years. The executives in Sony has in fact, adopted a more far-sighted approach and built in a very powerful processor right from the onset. Therefore, all claims that the PlayStation 3 (PS3) arrived late in the marketplace is simply unfounded. Keep your eyes on this video console and it'll soon lead the pack in a few years time.

Another main area of concern for video game consoles, is graphics. Graphics have always been one of the most talked about topic among gamers. To be fair, gamers should only compare graphics with games that are exclusive to each video console. That's because multi platform games may not be designed to fully utilize the potential in a video console, as the focus is on compatibility instead of performance. Everyone seems to be comparing graphics performance between the XBox and Sony Playstation 3 (PS3). From our own tests, Playstation displays 3D renderings with far more sharpness. And that can only be achieved with high end technology. The end result is that you get much more realistic environments. You don't have to take our word for it, simply make the observations yourself.

And finally, all gamers should consider the list of exclusive games before buying any video console. This factor, by and large, depends very heavily on the individual personal preference. We can get away with graphics or CPU performance issues. For some, as long as the games are playable on the console, who cares. But if the gamer falls in love with a game, and must absolutely get his hands on it, then he is out of luck if the console he owns doesn't support the game. So remember to check out some games, and see which console has your favorites on them.

To sum it all up, the PlayStation 3 (PS3) is a high end gaming machine. No doubt it has a slightly heftier price tag compared to the Xbox, but if you're a true hardcore gaming fan, you probably wouldn't mind the 50 to 100 dollars difference. That being said, I'm sure the executives at Sony firmly believes that true gamers know an excellent video console when they see one. And thus the decision to incorporate highly advanced hardware into the console, way ahead of its competition, even if it means bringing the cost higher. And I'm sure, in time to come, all true gamers will come to recognize that, and share the vision and excitement with the Sony executives.

Learning More About Internet Phone Adapters

Before we dive into internet phone adapters, you have to first understand more about how VoIP phone calls are made. When we make a phone call using a traditional land line, the voice signal that we send over the phone network is an analog signal. This signal is transmitted over the network and someone on the other end hears the voice.

The problem with such phone calls is that they lead to huge bills, especially when the calls are made to faraway countries. Before the Internet was invented, there was no other way to make international phone calls. So consumers have no choice but to pay hefty phone bills for their usage. The longer the duration of the calls, the bigger the bills.

Fortunately, the Internet offers an alternative way to make overseas phone calls. Data is transferred over the internet in the digital format, not in the analog format. So special hardware or software is required to convert the analog voice signal to the digital format, so that it can be transmitted over the internet. Once the data is converted into digital audio format, it can easily be transmitted using the Internet protocol (IP). This technology is called VoIP (voice over IP) technology.

For a VoIP call to work, a broadband internet connection is needed. If a computer is available, a VoIP can be made when special software has been installed in the system. Of course, a headset with a mic is necessary for delivering and receiving voice data.

However, not everyone likes the idea of having to use a computer just to make a simple phone call. An individual can make a VoIP call without using a computer by using an IP phone. This is a special phone that allows the voice to be converted to the digital format.

Still, some people are not satisfied. They argue that since they already have phones at home, why should they invest in additional hardware? So VoIP equipment engineers came up with internet phone adapters. You can connect an ordinary phone to an internet phone adapter, and make a VoIP phone call. Of course, the internet phone adapter must be connected to a modem, which in turn is connected to the internet.

There are many different types of internet phone adapters. The most common adapters have RJ45 sockets. Most home phones are connected to the RJ45 sockets. You can also use a USB phone adapter to connect to a computer. If you have more than 1 internet phone, you may wish to consider buying a 2/3/4 way internet phone adapter.

Internet phone adapters are widely available. You should be able to find them from local computer stores, or from online computer equipment retailers. When in doubt, always consult your service provider on the right adapter to buy.

Is PDA Tracking the Solution to Keeping Mobile Workers Safe?

There are many workers in the UK that are now classified as mobile or lone workers since much of their day to day work involves them working outside of the centralised office environment. It may be that they are a night time security guard or that they work for the social services and are frequently out of the office on home visits. Whatever their job title mobile workers often find themselves in unusual situations, but like office based workers their employers must ensure that they are protected and kept safe whilst on the road.

It is a general legal duty of employers under Section 2 of the Health and Safety at Work Act to maintain safe working arrangements for all their employees whether mobile or office based. In order to comply with this rule Section 3 of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations requires that employers must also carry out full risk assessments of the hazards to which their employees are exposed. For mobile workers these risks or hazards could include violent encounters from the general public, sudden illness or road traffic accidents.

As a result of this modern businesses now have strict rules and regulations for mobile workers and have detailed risk assessment documents that identify the possible risks and outline the measures they have put in place to help prevent these risks from occurring. In accordance with risk assessment laws, employers should consider in their assessment whether or not a single person can do the work safely and what arrangements are required to ensure the lone worker is at no more risk than employees working together.

For many employers and business owners these laws alongside the Duty of Care Legislation, which was introduced in 1991, have led to an increased awareness about their workers safety. Employers have had to respond to this legislation by introducing new methods of achieving these levels of safely.

As these laws and regulations have developed so to have the technologies and equipment used to help keep lone workers safe. Personal Digital Assistants are one such technology and have quickly become the mobile device of choice for many organisations. PDA’s enable business owners to get critical information to their mobile employees quickly and in real time, something that has proven to be indispensable in the modern business world.

A PDA device also enables business owners and managers to answer some of the many questions they must take into consideration when evaluating mobile worker risk. For example, when considering remote working it may be necessary to establish guidelines as to when the lone worker should check in with their managers or supervisors or track their movements in order to ensure their safety.

With PDA’s being readily available and carried by many mobile workers, innovative software solutions are now being utilised in order to keep track of these workers whereabouts at all times. As long as the PDA is switched on, tracking systems are able to pinpoint their exact location via a mapping system. A discreet panic button can be added should any member of your workforce need it. These panic buttons have the facility to be mounted in different locations for instance in a vehicle in order top make them as versatile as possible.

PDA tracking systems have a number of benefits making it a wise choice when thinking about safeguarding your mobile workers. The tracking software is able to be used with any Windows mobile device such as a PDA. Combine this with its covert possibilities, optional lone worker application, and access to Internet mapping amongst others, makes it a powerful tool for any business with mobile workers.

Even if your company does not have its own PDA’s, the tracking system provider can supply these. In short, the benefits of tracking systems and PDA tracking software are so great and diverse that it is an effective method of tracking and safeguarding workers against harm or unforeseen circumstances.
