Learning More About Internet Phone Adapters

Before we dive into internet phone adapters, you have to first understand more about how VoIP phone calls are made. When we make a phone call using a traditional land line, the voice signal that we send over the phone network is an analog signal. This signal is transmitted over the network and someone on the other end hears the voice.

The problem with such phone calls is that they lead to huge bills, especially when the calls are made to faraway countries. Before the Internet was invented, there was no other way to make international phone calls. So consumers have no choice but to pay hefty phone bills for their usage. The longer the duration of the calls, the bigger the bills.

Fortunately, the Internet offers an alternative way to make overseas phone calls. Data is transferred over the internet in the digital format, not in the analog format. So special hardware or software is required to convert the analog voice signal to the digital format, so that it can be transmitted over the internet. Once the data is converted into digital audio format, it can easily be transmitted using the Internet protocol (IP). This technology is called VoIP (voice over IP) technology.

For a VoIP call to work, a broadband internet connection is needed. If a computer is available, a VoIP can be made when special software has been installed in the system. Of course, a headset with a mic is necessary for delivering and receiving voice data.

However, not everyone likes the idea of having to use a computer just to make a simple phone call. An individual can make a VoIP call without using a computer by using an IP phone. This is a special phone that allows the voice to be converted to the digital format.

Still, some people are not satisfied. They argue that since they already have phones at home, why should they invest in additional hardware? So VoIP equipment engineers came up with internet phone adapters. You can connect an ordinary phone to an internet phone adapter, and make a VoIP phone call. Of course, the internet phone adapter must be connected to a modem, which in turn is connected to the internet.

There are many different types of internet phone adapters. The most common adapters have RJ45 sockets. Most home phones are connected to the RJ45 sockets. You can also use a USB phone adapter to connect to a computer. If you have more than 1 internet phone, you may wish to consider buying a 2/3/4 way internet phone adapter.

Internet phone adapters are widely available. You should be able to find them from local computer stores, or from online computer equipment retailers. When in doubt, always consult your service provider on the right adapter to buy.
